Surgical Orthodontics
What Is Surgical Orthodontics?
Through orthodontic methods we can reposition your teeth, thus improving both your appearance and your oral health. Surgical orthodontics refers to methods of correcting jaw issues, so you can eat, speak and breathe more easily.
When we move your jaw, we typically do it in conjunction with braces or some other type of orthodontia that will help ensure that teeth are still in the correct position after you’ve received your surgery.
Who Needs Surgical Orthodontics?
At West Hills Orthodontics we use surgical orthodontics for people with extreme jaw issues, including bite problems and asymmetries. Rest assured that, if we can, we will always try to treat your alignment issues with non-surgical treatment. We will only use surgical orthodontics if it is absolutely necessary
For a child or teenager, we will employ orthodontic appliances, if necessary, to direct the jaw. This preventive measure can help eliminate the need for surgery. This is why it’s so important to have your child or teen examined at a relatively early age. The jaw is usually set by the late teens.
How Does It Work?
We’ll consult with trusted oral surgeons to create a treatment plan for you or your loved one. We’ll then make sure your teeth are properly aligned. If they are not, you’ll undergo orthodontic treatment. We don’t perform surgery until your teeth are in proper alignment.
You’ll keep your orthodontic appliances throughout the process, even after your surgery. These appliances are important aids for keeping your teeth and jaw stable.
After your surgery, you should be able to return to your normal routine within ten to fourteen days. For most patients, the braces treatment lasts about six months after surgery.
